Assign. #3

ASSIGNMENT #3 NEIGHBORHOOD OBSERVATION AND REFLECTION
DUE OCTOBER 18th @ 11:59 uploaded to Blackboard   |   10 pts (10% of total grade)

In Weeks 6-7 we learned about observational research methods and how to take field notes. For this assignment you get the opportunity to practice this method in your study neighborhood.

Complete this assignment using the TESS  (https://psrg.commons.gc.cuny.edu/the-toolkit-for-the-ethnographic-study-of-space/) method we read about and discussed in class and do the following:

  1. Choose a place to observe in which you feel safe and comfortable and is out of any danger. This could be a park, plaza, a neighborhood block, or some other urban public space in your study neighborhood. Choose a place you feel is relevant to your profile.
  2. Observe the place for 30 minutes using the the 2-column TESS format—you can choose to be a direct participant observer by partaking in an activity or event or observe from ‘outside’ without directly partaking in the activity.
    1. As you observe create scratch notes in the columns (and with extra blank paper if you need it) that you can develop into field notes.
    2. Try out one or more of the three types of mapping (behavioral, movement, or physical traces).
    3. Take up to three photos that help convey what you are observing.
  3. Type up your scratch notes into field notes this means developing fuller sentences and paragraphs out of your 2-column scratch notes and adding any extra details or thoughts/reflections you had.

Please combine your typed field notes, scanned (or clearly photographed) scratch notes and map(s), and the photo(s) into one Word document or PDF and upload to the appropriate place on Blackboard.

  • Overall demonstrates poor observational data.
  • The fieldnotes are missing or don’t convey clear observation data.
