Assign. #5

ASSIGNMENT #5: NEIGHBORHOOD ECONOMIC AND HOUSING COMPOSITION
DUE NOVEMBER 8th  @ 11:59 uploaded to Blackboard   |   10 pts (10% of total grade)

In Weeks 8-10 we learned how to search, download, clean, and visualize data from the Census, ACS, and NYC OpenData. For this assignment you have the opportunity to do the same for data on your study neighborhood. Note: the data from this assignment may be used in your final neighborhood profile.

Please refer to the class activities from Weeks 8, 9, and 10 as a guide.

To complete this assignment, you need to:

1) Search for economic and/or housing datasets in the sources we reviewed in class—Census, American Community Survey, and/or NYC OpenData and save them as excel files. Be sure to:
a. Consider only economic or housing data for this assignment (e.g. employment status/rates,         housing tenure, rent burden etc.)
b. Start a folder to keep other datasets of interest as you may want to use them later in your             final profile—this can save you from having to search again.

2) Clean the datasets so you are working with only the relevant data for your specific neighborhood area. Remember, it’s best practice to duplicate the excel tab so you have an ‘original’ version and one that you work from. Be careful when sorting!

3) Visualize your data using excel in a manner of your choosing (e.g. bar graph, line graph, etc.) so the relevant data is easy to interpret. (This may mean more than one visualization). Be sure to:
a. Edit titles, labels, scales etc. to convey the information fully and clearly.
b. Think about color and consider what your data would look like if printed in greyscale (e.g. red and dark blue will both look like black).

4) Write a brief summary (~100 words) explaining what you learned from your data.

5) Combine your summary and data visualization into a Word doc. Be sure to include:
a. Your name and neighborhood area
b. A caption under your visualization citing the source.

Please upload the Word doc AND an excel file of your cleaned data to the appropriate places on Blackboard.
